Culture Starts at the Top

Organisational culture – or 'corporate culture' – is a much-discussed topic. Various studies underscore its importance. But what exactly is it? And how does it evolve in the desired direction?

It may well be one of the most elusive aspects of leadership. Elusive, yet with an almost immeasurable impact on an organisation’s success.

The attached article from The Economist once again attempts to shed some light on the questions surrounding the subject.

What the article barely touches upon, however, is the influence of exemplary behaviour – something no corporate culture policy, programme or communications strategy can match.

The combination of the Chair of the Supervisory Board and the CEO together represent the primary custodians of the organisation’s culture. Their behaviour – their personal conduct, day in and day out – defines that culture.

Once more: no policy, programme or communication can rival the power of leading by example.

You are most welcome to exchange thoughts on identifying and selecting candidates for these key roles in your organisation – and to reflect on the opportunities these roles offer in shaping the organisation’s culture.

Warm regards,

Aegeus
