AI usage is growing within organisations, but where is the policy?

It is striking that the use of LLMs – large language models – remains unstructured in so many organisations. Or, indeed, not used at all.
Consultancy firm Deloitte has recently conducted European research on this matter. This research shows that companies are considering AI / LLMs such as Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot etc. But that many people in these organisations are already using AI. Nearly half of the – European – respondents are familiar with AI and use it in their private environment. Almost a quarter of respondents also use AI in the work environment. Incidentally, a quarter of employees even pay for AI tools out of their own pocket.
Read more about this Deloitte research in the enclosed article from the Financial Times, published last February, by Sam Joiner. 30,000 consumers and employees were surveyed across 11 European countries. Nearly a quarter of employers appear to have no policy regarding the use of AI in the professional environment...
In general, it cannot be determined what risks organisations face if there is no clear policy on the use of AI. What is certain is that for every organisation it is at least useful to have one. And to make choices about which AI tools can be used for which purpose.
Few people know, for example, that Google's AI tool NotebookLM quite easily creates – English-language – podcasts. Listen here. Creating this podcast literally took me less than five minutes of work. Realise that countless new, easier AI tools for various functions become available every month.
Feel welcome to exchange thoughts on the composition of your leadership team in relation to these kinds of digital developments. Inevitable developments. For which you cannot determine too early why, where and how you want to lead them. Otherwise, AI will walk away from you, will run away with you...
